Before you book a tour in Sri Lanka, read this

7 things that go wrong on private tours — and how we sort them

Sri Lanka is easy to love.

But getting around it is hard.

Most trips here are sold by drivers and small agencies on WhatsApp. Many are good. Some are not. And from a chat, you can't tell which is which.

What travellers lose

  • Money—on extras along the way.
  • Days—stuck in the car.
  • Hours—in shops you never asked for.

You have maybe 7 days on the island. You don't want to lose one of them. Here are the 7 most common problems — and how we sort each one.

The "free" stop at a spice garden

You ask for a waterfall. You get a spice garden, a gem shop and an ayurveda "clinic". Because of this, half a day is gone.

Why? Drivers often earn from commissions — sometimes up to 50% of what you buy. So the "special price" in that shop is not special.

A cheap price, then extras on the road

Many tours show a low price for the car only. Then you pay on the road: park tickets, the safari jeep, train tickets, temple tickets.

On a 3-day Yala and Ella trip, the car alone is about $190–220. With tickets, jeep and train, it's closer to $340–380. The difference comes out of your wallet, one "small extra" at a time.

"Where does the driver sleep?"

Your driver needs a bed and dinner too. Some hotels give a free driver room, some don't.

When you book on Booking.com, the hotel often doesn't know a driver is coming. Travellers find out at check-in.

Seven hours in the car

Roads here are slow: 80 km can take 2–3 hours. Some itineraries squeeze three regions into one day.

The famous train is sold out

The Ella train is the most wanted ride on the island. Reserved seats open 30 days before and the popular trains sell out.

Safety on the road

Road safety is a real issue here: more than 90% of accidents are caused by dangerous driving.

A note on tips

Tips are your choice. As a guide: $5–15 a day for your driver-guide, LKR 1,000–1,500 per person for the safari jeep driver. Many restaurants already add 10% service charge.
